Omeka is an online templated virtual exhibition tool that is a collections based, web-based publishing platform for scholars, librarians, archivists, museum professionals, educators, and cultural enthusiasts. Omeka How-To (Under Construction)

Prezi is an online presentation design tool that allows users to create classroom or online presentations. Prezi differs from other presentation tools like PowerPoint in that it does not use slides but rather a navigable virtual canvas. Prezi How-To (Under Construction)

Images/Image sharing

Flickr is an online video and image hosting site that lets its users upload, organize and share their media in a variety of ways. is a social bookmarking site that not only lets you bookmark images, but lets you share the images with others. Images are organized with user-supplied tags.

Cooliris is a web browser plugin that provides interactive full-screen slideshows of online images.

Videos/Video Sharing

Youtube is an online video hosting site, letting users upload their own content and comment on that of other users. Videos are organized by user supplied tags, content, etc.

Like Youtube, Vimeo is an online video hosting site. A little less well-known, Vimeo has a cleaner, more streamlined interface.

Image/Video Annotation

VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate pages and leave comments.

VideoANT is a Video Annotation tool that allows users to combine web-based video with text-based annotation.


Slideshare allows users to upload, view, comment, and share slideshows created with presentation programs.

Cozimo is an online presentation sharing and management tool. Cozimo allows users to collaborate on visual media.

Data Visualization

D3 is a cross-browser compatible JavaScript library for creating interactive documents. Works with standard HTML and CSS, along with Scalable Vector Graphics.

Dipity is a web-hosted Timeline creation tool.

Gephi is an open-source tool for creating interactive visualizations of networks of data. Also includes options for displaying data in timeline and graph views.

Timeline - The Simile Project Timeline Widget is an open-source timeline tool that allows users to create an interactive timeline and lets users organize and track temporal data visually.

Verite TimelineJS is a JavaScript plugin that can incorporate a variety of media formats into a clean-looking horizontal timeline.

Content Management Tools

Drupal is a free software package that allows an individual or a community of users to easily publish, manage and organize a wide variety of content on a website.

Wordpress is a blogging platform. BGC Blogs is an installation of Wordpress Multi-User that allows us to easily generate and manage blogs. These blogs can be used for courses, organization, news bulletins, exhibitions, or whatever we can imagine.

Moodle is an online, collaborative learning environment specially suited towards schools. Moodle can be used to conduct online course, in the traditional classroom setting, and as a method of delivering content (like quizzes) to students.


Zotero is a bibliography tool in the form of a Firefox plugin from CHNM. Zotero is a free, open source tool with features like bibliographic management and organization, online citation capture, group collaboration and citation searching.

Evernote note management software is designed to capture and organize notes, media, images and more. Notes can be captured and uploaded to Evernote via cell phone, computer and internet.

  • Simile - The Simile project has created a suite of tools for information management and display developed out of MIT.
  • Center for History and New Media - CHNM has created a number of powerful tools (most notably Zotero and Omeka) which have changed the way technology has been integrated through the academic world.
